Jaeger-LeCoultre Q2718410 26mm Reverso Duo 271.84.10 Manual Hand Wound for men and women

For those who already familiar with JLC, “Reverso Duo” --which is the name of the Reverso’s sub-family (series) where this particular watch model belongs, will no longer needs any introductory. Say, it is like the Datejust for Rolex, Panerai’s Luminor, or maybe Tank for Cartier. It is a series of timepieces that are bold with their own patrimonial identity as a timeless classic, and they do hold their own (deeply) on the minds of enthusiasts by their "inside out" uniqueness since their first interception in the world of Swiss luxury mechanical watch aficionados.

Just like every Reverso which you can easily tell that its name comes from the fact that the case can flip around, this art deco era Jaeger-LeCoultre Q2718410 is a "two-faced" wrist watch. But, unlike the original Reverso that has a solid, decorated "second face," this watch that "capable of sliding into its base and of turning completely on its axis," comes with back-to-back dials that are driven by a single manual movement. It is the worthy praised manufacture mechanical calibre JLC 854/1, that gives you precise two-hands with a small seconds on one side, and another two-hands with 24-hour subsidiary on the other side.

This particular watch model is presented in Stainless steel on Brown alligator leather bracelet. Speaking of which, among the collection, there are also a steel on steel (ref. 2718110), rose-gold on leather (ref. 2712410), and rose-gold on rose-gold (ref. 2712110) variants as well which have a general design and features just exactly like this one.

General Design, Practicality, and Convenience

Despite of mostly being labelled for gents, this JLC’s ref. 2718410 watch itself is pretty much genderless and not too large to be worn by ladies. Its polished rectangular case, that is made of premium grade stainless steel and handsomely fashioned with a classy straight lines and subtle curving measures 26mm × 42.2mm --excluding the crown. Considering its complications, its 180º turnable case that comprises at least 50 parts ensuring its water resistance, its sturdiness and flawless swivel, is gorgeously slim with 9.3mm thickness only. The watch is an L/XL for men, so it would still be an XXL for women if they’re insist on wearing it.

Both of its faces are shielded with an extra durable sapphire glass that features anti-reflective coating, while its whole construction is guaranteed to be watertight to 30 meters for practical sake. The caseback is flat, fits comfortably on the wrist, and it is engraved with markings. The crown is fluted to makes it easier to use, and is decorated with the watchmakers hallmarking, and is accompanied with a polished push-piece right above it. When its "primary" dial on top, the crown is located at the right hand side. Goes without saying, it would be a "Destro Watch" styled timepiece when the other one is facing up.

Speaking of the leather bracelet, not only looking good, it is fairly thick, supple, and does give you such a nice feeling when it hugs your wrist. Its Brown bracelet, that is made of genuine alligator leather is slightly tapers from 20 mm to 16 mm wide, designed to be able to accommodates up to 8 inches of wrist’s circumference, and it conveniently fasten with a double folding buckle clasp.

The Mechanical Hand Wound Movement

JLC Calibre 854/1. As we have mentioned it once before, this timekeeper provides the convenience of letting you to know two different time-zones at once via its back-to-back dials, which makes it quite handy for frequent travelers. Speaking of which, the one that makes it happen is the fitted Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 854/1 inside. It is one of the watchmaker’s own mechanical manufacture movement that is personally developed, built, assembled, adjusted, and workshop crafted by Jaeger-LeCoultre themselves. Not only accurate and reliable with some decent degree of shock and magnetism resistance, this manual hand-winding movement is considerably a fine calibre, too, although needless to say, we don’t have the luxury to take a glance at its beauty due to this JLC’s 271.84.10 aliased Reverso Duo watch’s non-open-worked dials’ design.

The movement itself is quite fascinating, with a sophisticated construction that clearly showcasing how good is the technical capabilities and level of control over quality of a watchmaker that is said to be one of the best Swiss luxury watch manufacturer that is capable to produce their entire movement independently. For instance, to be able to flawlessly perform its complications, the Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 854/1 is built up with 180 pieces of individual components, yet, its size remains surprisingly slim at only 3.6mm thick.

Anyway, the movement is beating at the harmonic rhythm of 21,600 alteration per hour, and it contains 21 jewels within. Being a manual hand wound means that this calibre would starts kicking after you manually wound the crown several times to built up some potential power into its barrel. JLC854’s winding is performed by turning the crown clockwise, and the crown would lock when the movement is fully wound as it has an integrated mechanism to avoid overwinding. In which, under full wind, this single barrel calibre provides around 45 hours of power reserve, and, to ensure good operating accuracy, it is advisable to wind it regularly, at least once a day.

Under a good maintenance, this mechanical caliber is rated to be able to keep up a pleasing average daily deviation of less than ± 5 secs. Well, a little bird told us that there was a Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 854/1 equipped timepiece that performs at an average accuracy of ± 3 secs --which of course, it wont be happening without a praiseworthy care.

A Closer Look to the Faces

Typical to the JLC’s Reverso Complication Reverso Duo series, this Q2718410 timeless classic’s dials are finished in Silver and Black (Slate Grey), and both are decorated with a fine guilloché pattern, speaking of which, in order to make the surfaces inalterable through decades, a fine nickle layering is skillfully applied by electrolysis to them. These dials have a well balanced layout that each holds their own alluring symmetrical design, and provides an appreciable read-ability you’d sure to love.

Among these two dials, actually, there is no exact rule saying which one you have to set your home-time on. But, as it came out the box with the silver one upfront, lets just say that it is the home-time display while the Black one is for second time-zone.

Front Dial: Silvered. Its front dial, the Silvered one, features black transferred Arabic numeral hour markers, sword-shaped Blued-steel hour and minute “Bâton” hands, and a small seconds sub-dial that is situated at the 6 o’clock position. The sub-dial features central concentric guilloché, a slim blue hand with rounded tail, and painted black stick and Arabic numeral markers. The dial itself has a central squared sea wave patterned guilloché decoration, in which, there lays the watchmaker’s hallmarking right below the 12 o’clock position, and surrounding it, is a painted Black minute markers that is bolder in every 5 minutes interval representing the hour for easy reference. And, there is a tiny painted black “Swiss Made” at the center bottom of the dial.

Back Dial: Black (Slate Grey). Meanwhile, the Black (Slate Grey) diamond-patterned guilloché dial features a stepped, plain rounded area with a lacquer Black background with sunburst effect finishing central that is encircled by a painted white luminous minute markers. The dial also comprises luminous JLC’s hallmarking right below the 12 o’clock position, luminescent transferred stick and Arabic numeral hour markers, large sword-shaped oxidized-steel hour and minute “Eventail” hands, and a stepped 24-hour subsidiary with sunray finishing at the 6 o’clock position that features luminous arrow-headed hand and painted white markers. And, at the left and right sides of the sub-dial, there are painted “Night” and “Day” indicator in an arc that gives its overall looks a nice symmetrical accent.

Fashion Perspective and Thoughts

A vintage looking wrist accessory as this Jaeger-LeCoultre Q2718410 is without a doubt, oozing a lovely dose of elegance that is sure to refine any wardrobe.

It is simple with an uncluttered looks yet has a fine detailing that is simply flattering. Both of its dials have an "easy going" colors, which combined with the mirror finish of its case and the rich looking Brown alligator bracelet supporting it, makes it beautifully "shining" when being paired with suits, working dresses and formal attires alike. And being understated, it goes easy as well with casual outfits.

Also, by having two faces that differs to each other, it is like having two wrist watch at the same time. Certainly, it gives you another convenience on pairing. And indirectly, this feat makes it feels lighter for your wallet as it would be like to buy two luxury wrist accessories at the price of one.

We’d like to say that this 30m water resistant JLC Reverso Complication is a great everyday watch. But, even though it does provides all the needed versatility --as well as quality materials, reliable components, and superb construction that backing-up its overall endurance, frankly, even we ourselves would be hesitant to do so since it’s such a nice watch. Think of a car, you wont drive Rolls or Bentley in a daily term too, right? Not because it is unsuitable for, but it is simply because you’d like to treasure them more by doing so. Well, how’d you wear it is a matter of preference, though.

Pricing and Review’s Closure

Based on its pricing, this 26mm Jaeger-LeCoultre Q2718410 can be considered as a relatively affordable luxury watch. By saying so, it doesn’t means that the timepiece is a cheap ones. But, a worthy one in terms of price-quality ratio, in which, for all of its quality offering, this steel on leather "two face" manual wound timepiece is reasonably offered at an original manufactured suggested retail price of $9,600.00. And better yet, as it is not a new release, there is a good chance that you could snatch it for less than its MSRP.

We do agree with they who said that the Reverso Duo is one of those timeless classics that everyone should have. Doesn’t referring at just this particular version, though, as within the collection, there are also the Q2718110 that is presented in steel on steel, the rose-gold on leather Q2712410, or the Q2712110 that sports a luxurious rose-gold construction, which all are no less intriguing than this JLC’s ref. 2718410.

Aside of the materials, they have general design and features that are pretty much similar to the one we’re talking here. So, we thought this quick review would be appropriate enough to gives you a brief description for that three other watches. Just saying, those three other timepieces MSRP are $10,400.00, $20,000.00, and $33,000.00 respectively. And the answer would be "yes," that our subject here is the cheapest one of them.

Last but not least, of course, whatever our opinions are, the final decision would always be fully yours. Don’t just take our word for it.
